“Gumraah” is a remake of a Tamil movie called “Thadam” from 2019. It reminds us of old movies from the 1970s where two people who look the same often have different personalities—one is usually bad, and the other is good. After many twists in the story, they end up joining forces against a common enemy. This formula has worked well in the past, and the key is to add something new to keep the audience interested. The creators of “Thadam” did this, and director Vardhan Ketkar tries to do the same with “Gumraah.”
In the movie, Arjun Sehgal, played by Aditya Roy Kapur, is accused of a brutal murder. ACP Dhiren Yadav, played by Ronit Roy, has a personal grudge against Arjun and is eager to take him down before he retires. However, his junior officer, Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur), believes Arjun is innocent. The police also catch another suspect, a drunk man named Sooraj Rana, or Ronnie, who looks exactly like Arjun. Ronnie is a criminal involved in theft and gambling. While Dhiren should focus on Ronnie as a suspect, his obsession with Arjun leads him to ignore the obvious. The two officers, with their conflicting views, try to solve the case, but their egos get in the way of justice, allowing the real criminal to escape.
The film struggles with pacing in the first half, making it a bit slow to get into.
