What is family? It’s a group of people you’re born into, and you have a special, sometimes messy connection with them. You can love them and be frustrated with them at the same time. You might feel you can’t live with them, but also can’t imagine being without them. Every family has its secrets. What happens when those secrets come out? Will the family stay strong or fall apart?
The movie “Gulmohar,” directed by Rahul V Chittella, tells the story of the Batra family from Delhi. They are moving out of their fancy house called Gulmohar after living there for 34 years. The house has been sold, and as they pack up, the matriarch, Kusum (played by Sharmila Tagore), wants to have one last Holi celebration with everyone before they go their separate ways. This decision to leave the family home affects everyone deeply.
Arun (Manoj Bajpayee) is frustrated with his son Aditya (Suraj Sharma), who is trying to start his own business but isn’t very focused. Arun’s daughter is dealing with her own relationship issues, and his wife (Simran) is trying to keep the family united. There’s also another part of the Batra family, led by Kusum’s brother-in-law Sudhakar (Amol Palekar). They are doing okay financially, but not as well as Arun and Kusum, which has always bothered Sudhakar. He wants the property for himself and might have a plan to get it. As the story unfolds, the family faces challenges that test their bonds.
