As December rolls in, Netflix is back at it, churning out its annual batch of holiday rom-coms. This week, we unwrap “Our Little Secret,” marking Lindsay Lohan’s third festive film with the streaming giant, following “Falling for Christmas” and “Irish Wish.” Unfortunately, like its predecessors, this movie doesn’t do much to keep its titular ‘secret’ under wraps. The storyline is as predictable as your favorite old Christmas sweater.
Directed by Stephen Herek and featuring a cast that includes Lindsay Lohan, Ian Harding, and Kristin Chenoweth, the film follows the familiar trope of a couple trying to rekindle their romance amid holiday cheer. But with the holiday rom-com formula firmly established, one can’t help but wonder why the film doesn’t bring any fresh festive flavor to the table.
The film kicks off with an animated sequence that tells the story of Avery (Lindsay Lohan) and Logan (Ian Harding), childhood friends who fall in love but drift apart due to career ambitions and distance. Fast forward a decade, and they awkwardly reunite while dating siblings, leading to a series of comedic mishaps as they try to hide their past from their families.
However, the opening flashback feels rushed and lacks emotional depth, making it hard for viewers to connect with Avery and Logan’s story. The film relies too heavily on nostalgic hints from their parents instead of showcasing meaningful chemistry between the leads. Their relationship comes across as more platonic than romantic, with little emotional depth or grand gestures to convince us they are meant to be together. Additionally, the film fails to explore why their current relationships are faltering, leaving significant gaps in the story that weaken the central romance. Overall, “Our Little Secret” is a forgettable addition to the holiday rom-com genre, lacking the charm and warmth that make these films enjoyable.
